The 11^th and 12^th of November 2011: This unique Chandler Chuck Wagon Cook-off competition combines the sounds, smells, and tastes of the Old West. Teams work from authentic 1880s chuck wagons to cook five courses: bread, beans, meat, potatoes, and dessert. Judges decide winners in each category, as well as best authentic wagon and best overall meal. The Chandler Chuck wagon Cook-off also features entertainment and activities that highlight history, cooking and local foods. Free parking will be available during both days.
Soon to come is Santa Claus’s arrival at Chandler! There is a lot of family fun planned. You can meet Santa Claus and lunch with him.

Earlier this week, Arizona State announced an extension of its business school will be built at the Candler 101 office park. Now Arizona University has stated its MASTER-IP program will be expanded to include a satellite in downtown Chandler:

MASTER-IP, offered through the university’s College of Education, is an acronym for Math and Science Teacher Education & Retention Industry Partnerships. The program has two parts, one leading to a master’s degree and another for professional development.

It is one of the latest examples of how higher education is playing a bigger role in Chandler. This week, Arizona State University announced it is locating its newest W.P. Chandler Neighborhood Added To National Register of Historic Places

A walk through Chandler, Arizona’s “Silk Stocking” neighborhood is a chance to see and feel the town as it boomed during the post WWI years. The neighborhood runs along Washington and Colorado Streets, bordered by Erie St. and Chandler Blvd to the north and south. This historic district was one of the first neighborhoods to employ zoning ordinances, which was a new concept in America in the 1920s. The new regulations placed an emphasis on families and the visual appearance of the neighborhood, and the result was almost exclusively single-family residential homes.

The neighborhood got its name in 1919 from a local newspaper columnist that remarked if a man could afford the $3,000 minimum building cost, he could surely afford to buy his wife silk stockings. The Henry Peterson house at 218 Washington Street was the most lavish of the early homes in chandler. A prominent rancher and town leader, Peterson certainly wasn’t reserved in his home building endeavor, earning the house the distinction as “most pretentious” by the Chandler Arizonan. Other wealthy families added to the building in the area, including the Bashas – founders of the supermarket chain well-known to residents of Arizona.

On August 29, 2011, the Silk Stocking Neighborhood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. While no longer the stomping grounds of the well-to-do as it was in the Roaring ’20s, rehabilitation is currently taking place so future generations can feel the experience of Chandler as it was nearly 100 years ago.
